The luxury of a large bath
Features of a large bath
To be able to enjoy a bath with a partner, you should pay particular attention to three things when choosing your large bathtub:
- The bath’s interior should be designed so that two people can comfortably sit in it, whether that is next to or opposite each other. The taps should therefore be fitted centrally, as opposed to at the top or bottom end of the bath. Ergonomic backrests are an additional plus.
- To ensure comfort, the drain should also be positioned centrally, so that neither person has to sit on it.
- The bath’s maximum capacity should generally be greater than that of a traditional one-person bathtub. If you intend to bathe as a pair, start by filling the tub halfway and then climb in. Then, if it is not full enough, you can top it up until the perfect water level is reached.
The shape of a large bath matters too
Bathtubs come in many shapes and sizes – round or rectangular, freestanding, against the wall, or surrounded by tiled panels. It is the shape of the bath’s outer that is crucial here because this determines how much floor space the tub will occupy in your bathroom. However, the outer shape does not say much about how spacious the bath is: this is determined by the interior alone. If you decide to purchase a large bath, you must first identify how much space you have available for it. Then you can decide how best to use the space.
Rectangular baths – the classic
Most baths have a rectangular outer shape, whether they are designed for one or two bathers. The main advantage of rectangular baths is that they can often be easily integrated into a bathroom. They can be installed either in a corner or as a freestanding feature.
Small rectangular baths are available in lengths starting from 140 cm, but are generally slightly longer, measuring between 160 and 175 cm. Large rectangular baths for two people can also measure up to 190 cm in length.
Corner baths – ideal for bathing as a pair
Corner baths are mostly triangular in shape, allowing two people to sit and bathe particularly comfortably. They are usually installed in the corner of the room and are especially suited to small bathrooms, because they take up less space. Furthermore, corner baths offer a generous surface that is ideal for storing your bath accessories while bathing.
Freestanding baths – for bigger bathrooms
Do you have bathroom that is at least 12 m² in size and are you looking to make your bath its centrepiece? Then why not install a large, freestanding bath! Freestanding baths are available in curved and angular shapes, with a range of sizes to choose from – starting with small baths measuring 155 cm in length, up to large tubs that are 190 cm long.
If a completely freestanding bath isn’t exactly what you had in mind, you can install the bath almost freestanding in front of a wall. This way, the front and the top and bottom ends are all accessible. This creates a modern bathing landscape where you can climb into the bath from three sides. Additionally, you can use the wall-facing side to create an extra storage surface within arm’s reach of the bath. Assuming your bathroom is big enough, you can also build a medium-height wall and position the bath against it. This creates an optical divide in the room without decreasing its size, and opens up many design options using tiles, wallpaper and paint.
Special baths – for flexibility
A special bath consisting of a bath and shower offers a practical 2-in-1 solution for bathrooms with limited space. These baths are wider at one end, providing a larger, flat standing area for showering. Assuming the wall used to install the shower system is tiled, bathing and showering are equally enjoyable in such a 2-in-1 bath.
Round baths – no corners or edges
A round bath will transform your bathroom into a private spa area. Although a round bath requires sufficient space to achieve the desired design effect, in a sufficiently spacious bathroom it immediately evokes that holiday feeling.
Baths in special shapes – bathing pleasure for individualists
In addition to the bath options already mentioned, a range of special shapes is also available. Take, for example, our trapezium-shaped baths, which offer plenty of space while also facilitating a space-saving bathroom design.
What is the water capacity of a large bath?
A full bath for one person, bathing in a standard bath measuring 180 x 80 cm, requires between 150 and 180 litres of water. If you are bathing with a partner you should use less than this volume so that the bath does not overflow. However, depending on the model, this capacity can increase to almost double if you choose a large bath or a model that deviates from the classic rectangle shape.
And what does a full bath cost?
In a modern, well insulated bath, the water maintains its temperature for a long time, which means you usually only need to fill the bath with hot water once. The costs of this are definitely manageable: on average, one litre of (warm) water costs roughly one euro cent. A full bath in a large tub with a capacity of 250 litres only costs around €2.50 for water, drainage and energy.
Most baths are available with optional whirlpool systems.
